FAQ's

1. How much should I allow for waste?

Add 5% to your room measurement.

2. Are all oaks the same.?

No, there are about 600 species of Oak. The best oak is European Oak , Quercus Robur and there’s a clue in the name. Some suppliers will try to sell American White Oak , which is cheaper but blander, or Mongolian Oak, which is inferior in quality.

3. Why should prices vary?

Bearing in mind a log is round, the wider the width of the board, the smaller yield one will get from a log, so wider boards cost more. Oak will come with all sorts of grades. Prime grade allows for almost no knots and because of the yield, the price is much more expensive. Usually, oak is sold in a mixed grade which allows for a certain amount of knots, sapwood and other marks.

4. Do you charge for delivery?

Yes, all our prices exclude delivery. You should allow another £85-£150 for delivery depending on your location and quantities. Your flooring will arrive on a pallet, so you should make sure somebody is present to offload the timber from the lorry.

5. What is better – prefinished or unfinished oak?

We believe finishing the oak on site will bring out the qualities and beauty of the grain. In addition, you’ll know exactly what oil or lacquer will be used, so , if you have a requirement in the future to maintain or finish the oak, you will be able to what has been used originally. Alternatively, we can arrange to finish the oak in the factory. The worst kind of finish is that applied by manufacturers, often from China, who use machines to coat the oak and the final result looks more like a laminated floor.

6. Can you use solid oak flooring over underfloor heating?

No, you should use engineered flooring with a good underlay which will conduct the heat.

7. Can you use solid oak flooring on concrete?

Yes, as long as the concrete has dried our properly. For a new screed, you should allow one month for every one inch of screed? The floor will be laid using adhesive and the choice of adhesive is important, as it shouldn’t have any water content which will evaporate and possible damage the oak.

8. Can I keep my existing skirting boards?

The oak flooring is never fitted tight to a wall, as one must allow for expansion. Therefore skirting boards must be removed and refitted once the floor is fitted. If this is not possible, scotia can be fitted between the floor and the skirting.
